If you use MegaTraveller's Starship Encounters table from the Imperial Encyclopedia (page 91), here are several tables you can use when you roll Nonstandard for the starship type. Otherwise, they are just ship encounter tables.

Minor Criminals are just Thugs and such, with maybe a decent Leader here or there.

10 Distinct Mental Attributes to flesh out NPCs (or even Player Characters)

These are distinct from INT (Intellect - Intelligence and Reasoning) and EDU (Education - Training & Memory).  Many Referees already use Perception and Determination.

Roll 2d6 for each one. Or pick which ones the Character is good or bad at.

Perception (PER)

– The process of interpreting sensory input to form an understanding of the environment.

Emotion (EMO)

– The capacity to experience, express, and regulate affective states (e.g., joy, fear, anger).

Imagination (IMA)

– The ability to form mental images or concepts not present to the senses; includes creativity and simulation.

Willpower (WIL)

– The mental faculty of conscious choice and self-control in the face of impulses or adversity.

– (Volition) The faculty or power of using one's will.

– (Agency) The capacity of individuals to have the power and resources to fulfill their potential.

Integrity (ITG)

– Judgment to do the right thing, even if it isn't in your best interest

Optimism (OPT)

– Hopefulness and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something

Intellectual curiosity (ITC)

– The inherent drive to seek knowledge and understanding of the world around us, exploring new ideas and perspectives

Determination (DET)

– Strength of purpose towards a specific end

– You could use the MegaTraveller statistic instead.

Empathy (EMP)

– The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

Self-Awareness (SFA)

– The ability to understand your own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, as well as how they impact yourself and others.

– The capacity to reflect on one's own thoughts, feelings, actions, and existence.

Attention (ATT)

– The ability to selectively focus mental resources on specific stimuli or tasks.

MgT2e+ Target Practice using Effect

So, a Target is a (usually) stationary object with concentric circles on it. The smaller the circle, the higher the score. Therefore, using Effect (Table on pg. 59 / pg. 61 in the Update), the Target would look like this:

0  - Outer Circle (Marginal Success)

1+ - Inner Circle (Average Success)

6+ - Bullseye (Exceptional Success)

Joe Traveller was a Scout and only learned a little about Gun Combat. So, if Joe has Gun Combat-0 and a DEX DM of 0, he can only Aim and use LaserSights for a Bonus to Attack. He decides to Aim for one whole Round of 3 Minor Actions, and Aim for his Minor Action in his second Round, giving him a +4 Aiming Bonus. Add the LaserSights Bonus of +1 and he adds a +5 to his roll. He needs an Average check of 8+. The Target is 10 meters away - Standard Range for a Gauss Pistol.

He rolls a 5 + 2 for 7 and adds the +5 Bonus for a 12! Joe hits the Inner Circle on the Target with an Effect of 4.

He Aims again, and after Aiming for one Minor Action in the second Round, fires again with a +5 Bonus. He rolls a 4 +1 for a 5 and adds the +5 Bonus for 10, hitting the Inner Circle again with an Effect of 2.

So now Mary Traveller walks up to take a turn. She was in the Imperial Army. She has Gun Combat-2 and a DEX DM of +1. Using a Gauss Pistol with LaserSights like Joe, she Aims just like Joe did.

She rolls 2 + 2 for 4, adds Gun Combat-2, DEX DM +1 for 7, and the Aiming and LaserSights Bonus of +5 for a total of 12, hitting the Inner Circle with an Effect of 4.

She Aims again, the same as before.

She rolls 2 +4 for 6, adds Gun Combat-2 and DEX DM of +1 for 9, and the Aiming and LaserSights DM of +5 for a total of 14, hitting the Bullseye! with an Effect of 6!

You can see what's important for Firing a Ranged Weapon:

And if the Target is at Short Range, you even get another +1.

All of those DMs and Bonuses add up.

Try the Target out with your own characters. Keep a HoloTarget on your ship for downtime.

You could use this for throwing Darts in a Starport Bar, too. Swap out Gun Combat for whatever skill Darts falls under (I think it's Athletics) - or just a DEX check.

Combat is on pg. 73 in the Updated Core Rulebook.

If you want, you can change the placement of the target at Short Range or Long Range or try other variations from the Combat chapter.

Making a competent Psion in MgT2e+

I see people ask sometimes about making a Psion in the current version of Traveller.

This is the best way I see to do it:

Pre-Career in Psionic Community

• - From the Traveller Companion
• - You get the Psionic Testing and Training free, even if you fail Entry
• - Take Telepathy for the first Talent. There's no roll for it if you take it first.
• - Increase Skill Levels in Talents you just gained
• - Increase PSI if possible
• - Try to get anything Psionics-wise that you can in the Pre-Career because it will only help later.
• - Don't forget the extra PSI point the Pre-Career gives
• - If you fail at Entry, you can still go into Psion as the 1st Career.

Term 1 in Psion

• - This is really the best 1st Term if your character had Psionic Community for a Pre-Career.
• - It works even if the character's PSI is a bit low. But not too low.
• - This is where you build the Talents up so they are useable later.
• - Increase Skill Levels in Talents you already have
• - Increase PSI as much as possible
• - Adding new Talents is nice, but they will always be low-level getting them at this point.

Term 2 in whatever you want

• - You can take University here if you want.
• - But if you don't make it well in the Pre-Career and the 1st Career, you will always be a low-level Psion without some enhancements like a PSI Battery.

Remember, you have a minimum of 2 on every roll, so it's:

And then you get almost all of the lower level skills without rolling or easily.
